Top tips to boost your mental health and wellbeing

Author Emily Stone Co-founder Gilded Bee

Making people feel valued is at the heart of Gilded Bee, whether that's employees, customers or other key stakeholders.

We design our wellness hampers to support at least one of the widely recognised 'five steps to mental wellbeing' from the NHS: Connect, Move, Learn, Give and Live in the moment.

It’s not only well-chosen gifts that can inspire self-care, trying these tried-and-tested lifestyle changes could help you to live a happier, healthier life. (Source: NHS)  I know from personal experience it’s often easier said than done though, so I’ve suggested super simple small steps you can take to make a difference. I suggest you focus on one each week to start with to avoid feeling overwhelmed. I’m starting with getting more sleep, which as a night owl is something I always struggle with.

The photo to the right was taken on a girls trip to celebrate my big 40 last year (I'm the one with the big cheesy grin on my face in the bottom right corner). When this photo was taken my wellbeing status was at an all time high as I spent an incredible weekend exploring and learning about Copenhagen, cycling, walking (lots of walking) and connecting with this amazing bunch of friends. These experiences are so important to our overall wellbeing, but creating time and prioritising them can be tricky. Why should it take a 40th to enjoy a weekend with friends? We should create these moments when ever we can.

1. Connect With Others

Good relationships inside and outside of work are important. They can give you an opportunity to share experiences, provide emotional support and help you build a sense of belonging.

Tips for connecting with others

  • Switch off your device. I know that sounds impossible. Start with small breaks from your devices and try to recognise if what you're looking at is actually making you feel anxious in any way.
  • Sit down and enjoy a cup of tea with a colleague. We love Nemi tea as it's certified organic and they support refugees.
  • Go for a walk with a friend.
  • Exercise with a friend.
  • Play games with your family.
  • Make space in your day for others.
  • Volunteer your time to help someone in need.
  • Take time to get to know your colleagues and what interests they have.
  • Call a friend you haven't spoken to for ages.
  • Travel somewhere new with a friend.
  • Get to know other members of your community.

2. Move

There are so many amazing benefits to moving and celebrating your incredibly clever body.  Being active is not only great for your physical health and fitness, but it can also improve your mental wellbeing.

Top tips to get you moving

  • Walk up the stairs instead of taking the lift
  • Go for a walk.
  • Do a workout. We love fitness dice - a dice you roll to land on one of a range of exercises, from jumping jacks to walking lunges. It keeps exercise fun and varied.
  • Walk or cycle to work.
  • Try a walking meeting.
  • Walk around and explore a town or city you've never been to before.
  • Try yoga.
  • Get enough sleep - this might sound out of place, but being rested makes you more likely to be active the next day.

3. Learn New Skills

Research shows that learning new skills can boost your self confidence, help you connect with others and build a sense of purpose.

Top tips on learning a new skill

  • Try cooking something new - we love to include recipe cards in our hampers.
  • Try taking on a new responsibility at work such as mentoring someone.
  • Try a new DIY project.
  • Enrol on a course at your local college.
  • Try a new craft - our wreath and bauble making kits make wonderful gifts to help you learn something new.

4. Give To Others

Research suggests that acts of giving and kindness can help improve your mental wellbeing by giving you a feeling of purpose, helping you connect with others and creating positive, warm, fuzzy feelings of doing good. Many of our suppliers give back in some way, such as Nemi Teas who support refugees in the UK, and Stand4 socks who donate a pair of socks to the homeless for every pair sold. At Gilded Bee, we work with Ecologi and together we have planted thousands of trees.

Other top tips to give and show kindness

  • Spend time with friends and relatives who need support.
  • Take time to listen and support others.
  • Try volunteering in your community.
  • Donate your unwanted clothes and household goods to charity.
  • Buy from companies who have a purpose and give back, such as Nemi Teas, Stand4 Socks and also VENT for Change, a sustainable stationery company we work with for our hampers who support children’s education projects worldwide.

5. Live In The Moment

Taking time to slow down and be in the present moment is really good for you. We often include a gratitude journal in our hampers (like the Pause one shown here) to encourage recipients to take time for reflection and write down things for which they’re grateful. They don't need to be big things, they can be small things such as the yummy breakfast you had this morning, the wonderful team you work with or it could even be a thought or feeling you are grateful for.

Being mindful can help you enjoy life more and understand yourself better. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges.

Top tips to living in the moment

  • Write in your gratitude journal daily.
  • Take a moment to pause.
  • Create daily rituals such as enjoying a cup of tea in your favorite spot before starting your day.
  • Go for a walk and pay attention to the nature around you.
  • Try different breathing techniques, learning to control your breath.
  • Try Yoga. We love the Tree Pose as it's simple to do and helps to centre your thoughts. We often include travel yoga mats in our hampers to help recipients be in the moment wherever they are.
